Working Around Art: How we deal with challenging situations

Many times, our crane and rigging work requires us to adapt to some difficult situations. We’ve worked around mine sites and in the backwoods of North Idaho, using both advanced machinery and communication to get the job done. 

Recently, we had a new challenge — working around a nearly century-old piece of functional art in an old Spokane neighborhood. 

Our team was performing an inspection, as well as a telecommunications equipment upgrade, on equipment attached to a water tower in south Spokane, near Manito Park. The project spanned several days, and required planning, communication and the proper equipment. 

The water tower, designed by J.W. Robinson and built in 1931, was a work of art for the time — it is the only water tower in the city associated with the art deco period. Standing at 134 feet tall and with a fluted octagon design, working around this functional piece of art is a challenge. 

In addition, there is a confined area around the base of the water tower to work — traffic flow and safety were concerns during this project. 

However, thanks to the range of machinery Strate Line offers, our team is able to work and reach all sides and different elevations on the water tower. Long-necked cranes and communication between our teams help us reach areas most machines can’t get to.
